La Frontera with Pati Jinich | Wine Tasting in Valle de Guadalupe | Season 2

Hugo DAcosta is widely considered the pioneer of Mexican winemaking.

But his son Lucas is not far behind.

40 miles south of Tijuana at their vineyard in Guadalupe Valley, Im tasting two wines from Hugo and two from Lucas.

has this student become the master?

Lets try the sparkling first.

Which one is this?

Espuma de Piedra.

Blanc de blancs, white from white grapes.

What we are looking for here is that the grapes have a nice acidity, which is what you look for in sparkling wines.

Say cheers.

Say cheers and look into each others eyes.

Look into the eyes.

Delicious.

So this one is Arre NiƱo.

So he has a crazy label.

I can totally see the difference.

You know, the difference in approaches just by looking at the label.

- Exactly.

- Okay.

Okay, so this is a natural wine.

Thats right.

With very little manipulation.

I mean no chemical manipulation, but probably a little more physical manipulation.

What do you mean?

In other words, it goes through mills, it goes through racking, things like that, that dont involve using any type of chemical.

Its interesting.

Hey, thats interesting, Im kidding!

Its delicious.

Its very fruity.

A little like pepper.

- Things like that, right?

- Yeah.

Fruity.

Very fresh.

Very fresh.

Oops.

We can't show this on PBS.

Editors don't show that label.

So, its Cabernet-Grenache.

I love Grenache!

Listen... Its smooth, smooth, smooth.

It has a lot of personality, but very smooth.

And its part of the provocation.

In other words, with a label like that, super provocative, - and a very elegant wine.

- Elegant.

Fascinating.

I love that.

You hear that.

Super aggressive label, super suave wine.

Totally fooled me.

Well, the last one is the first wine we created and of course, we want you to try it.

Its your original.

With this wine we started as an independent enterprise.

This is Vino de Piedra, from the winery we just visited.

So, this is Cabernet-Tempranillo.

Its the last one.

Thank you very much for inviting me.

Its our pleasure.

This is your home and now you know where to find us.

Its interesting.

I mean, what a presence!

This is very bold.

Its robust.

It is weighty, robust wine, with a wide range of aromas and flavors.

This wine resembles some of our family, a little ego, so it ask for attention.

When youre serving it, it likes you to smell it, to taste it.

- That you dont let go.

- That you dont let go.

Its beautiful.

You two do know how to sell your wines.

Call now.

Yes!

Call 1-800...

So, whose was better?

I'm not going to start a family feud.

You'll have to visit Casa de Piedra to find out.
